Discover, Learn, and Play Jazz this Summer at Harlem School of the Arts' Great Days of Jazz!
Register for our summer jazz intensive teaching the music and significance of jazz legends captured in the iconic photo, "A Great Day in Harlem."
In 1958, Fifty-eight jazz musicians were photographed by the late Art Kane, just 12 blocks away from where HSA opened our doors, seven years later.

This two-week program for ages 10-17 brings students into the Harlem jazz community of 1958, where young and old musicians unified history and the modern jazz movement. During this intensive, you'll learn about the pivotal jazz musicians that appeared in that photo and play some of their music.

During the two weeks we'll focus on the life and music of:
William "Count" Basie
Art Blakey
John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie
Benny Golson
Coleman Hawkins
Thelonius Sphere Monk
Horace Silver
Sonny Rollins
Jimmy Rushing
Lester Young
Mary Lou Williams

You'll come away with an appreciation of the vibrant role jazz plays in our musical
landscape, in Harlem history, and the unique talent assembled during that "Great Day in Harlem."
